I was walking around my local reservoir when I spotted two rats. And honestly? They were adorable. 🥰

There they were, going about their business, eating someone else’s breakfast. They were a little wary of me, even though I wasn’t going to interrupt. I found myself thinking something that probably isn’t said often enough: Rats are actually rather lovely. I know. I can practically hear some of you recoiling from the screen. 😝
Brown rats don’t exactly have the best reputation. They’re usually associated with bins, sewers, gnawed cables and horror-movie squeaking. But strip away the stereotypes and you find a fascinating, intelligent and remarkably adaptable animal.
And perhaps we should give them a little more credit.
🧠 They’re surprisingly clever
Rats are highly intelligent mammals and excellent problem-solvers. They’re capable of learning, remembering routes and working things out – which is rather impressive for an animal most people would rather not share their garden with.
❤️ They’re social animals
Rats aren’t solitary little villains skulking around in the darkness. They’re social creatures that communicate with one another and form relationships. And honestly, there’s something rather sweet about seeing two of them together.
🌿 They’re incredibly adaptable
Few mammals have mastered the art of ‘well, this is where we live now’ quite like the brown rat. Woodland, farmland, waterways, urban environments… they’re remarkably adaptable animals. Humans have spent centuries changing the landscape around them, and the rat’s response has essentially been: “Oh, you’ve built something new! Excellent, we can share. 😁 ”
🐀 They’re actually quite beautiful
Just look at this cutie! It’s basically a squirrel with a little less bushy tail, that’s all!

And those tiny whiskers twitching while it investigates the world around it? Ridiculously cute!
👃 They’re curious little explorers
Their whiskers and excellent sense of smell help them investigate their surroundings. A rat wandering along the reservoir isn’t necessarily doing anything sinister at all. It’s just having a ratty little day out. 😄
I’m not suggesting that everyone needs to become a rat-fan overnight. The two little characters were causing no harm, they were just surviving… like all of us, while also being super cute! 🤷🏻♀️
